Florida House District 119 in West Miami-Dade has quietly become one of the state's most intriguing legislative battlegrounds, and a premier showcase for Gen Z political engagement. For two consecutive election cycles, this district has been contested primarily by young candidates, signaling a clear generational shift in who seeks to shape state policy.
In this cycle, voters are presented with two compelling Gen Z voices who reflect distinctly different approaches to governance: Republican incumbent Juan Carlos Porras and Democratic challenger Rey Sordo. Rather than issuing a traditional singular endorsement, The County offers a joint recommendation evaluating the unique strengths, accomplishments, and perspectives both candidates bring to West Miami-Dade.
Elected in 2022 as the first Gen Z member of the Florida House of Representatives ever, incumbent Rep. Juan Carlos Porras has compiled a substantive legislative record in a short time. His standout achievement in Tallahassee has been his leadership on Homeowners Association (HOA) reform. Recognizing the rampant mismanagement, lack of oversight, and financial abuses plaguing South Florida residential communities, Porras championed key legislation to enforce transparency, increase criminal penalties for corrupt HOA board members, and protect property owners from predatory practices.
Porras has demonstrated that he possesses the technical policy skill and institutional savvy required to navigate the legislative process and deliver tangible victories for his constituents. However, as he seeks to continue his service, we caution Porras to avoid falling into rigid party-line dogmatism. District 119 is a diverse, hardworking community that benefits most when its representative governs with moderation, resists hyper-partisan distraction, and actively builds consensus across the aisle on regional issues like property insurance and transit. He should focus on those issues, and reject the culture war politics that he has been party to for the past four years.
On the other side of the ballot, challenger Rey Sordo brings a passionate, neighborhood-first perspective centered on the acute financial pressures facing South Florida’s working families and young adults. Sordo speaks with compelling authenticity about the cost-of-living crisis, placing housing affordability, skyrocketing utility rates, and accessible healthcare at the core of his campaign.
As a first-time candidate running as a Democrat in a traditionally conservative-leaning district, Sordo is unarguably an underdog in this race. Yet, his candidacy provides a vital counterweight on the ballot. His lived experience as a young resident navigating Florida’s punishing housing and job markets gives him a sharp, relatable focus on the everyday realities confronting Gen Z and working-class voters. Sordo’s energetic advocacy ensures that systemic affordability issues remain front and center in the district’s political conversation. Should he be unsuccessful, we urge him to run for a local seat.
