Florida House District 100 presents voters with two candidates who bring unusually relevant credentials to public office. Both Democrat Michael Ferguson and Republican Yoni Anijar are attorneys with military backgrounds. But after considering the candidates and the needs of this coastal Broward district, The County endorses Michael Ferguson.
Ferguson, an attorney and U.S. Air Force veteran, has built his candidacy around affordability, property insurance, public safety, environmental protection and the rising cost of remaining in South Florida. Those are not abstract concerns in District 100, which stretches along Broward's coast from Fort Lauderdale north toward Deerfield Beach.
Republican nominee Yoni Anijar deserves consideration. Anijar is also an attorney and serves as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. His campaign has emphasized housing affordability, insurance reform and election integrity.
But Anijar has also aligned his candidacy with President Donald Trump's political agenda. In Tallahassee, where partisan loyalty too often takes precedence over the practical problems facing South Floridians, that gives us pause.
District 100 is currently represented by Republican Chip LaMarca, who is term-limited. It is the rare Broward legislative seat still held by a Republican and has consequently become one of the state's significant legislative battlegrounds.
We believe Ferguson offers the stronger opportunity for a reset.
His experience as a military lawyer — working both as a prosecutor and defense counsel — suggests an appreciation for something increasingly absent from our politics: institutions, due process and the obligation to consider more than one side of an argument.
More importantly, his priorities match the immediate challenges facing the district. Residents need meaningful action on property insurance and affordability, protection of Broward's coastline and infrastructure, and a representative focused more on delivering results than participating in Tallahassee's ideological warfare.
Ferguson will still have something to prove. He has not previously held elected office, and campaign promises are easier to make than legislative coalitions are to build. If elected, voters should expect him to demonstrate independence from his own party when South Florida's interests demand it.
But between two capable candidates, Ferguson presents the stronger combination of priorities, temperament and potential.
