Judicial races rarely receive the attention they deserve, despite the enormous authority entrusted to those who sit on the bench. In Broward's race for Circuit Court Judge, Group 52, The County recommends David Fry.
Fry brings considerable courtroom experience to the race. Currently, he works as an Assistant Public Defender in Broward County and was previously an Assistant State Attorney. According to Fry's candidate statement submitted to the Florida Bar, he has been involved in more than 70 jury trials leading to a verdict and has experience in criminal prosecution, criminal defense, and civil litigation.
That level of experience counts. A circuit judge may handle complicated cases and Fry's experiences in both prosecution and defense give him a broader perspective of the people and issues before the court.
Fry has also highlighted the need for due process, sound judgment, dignity and compassion in judicial proceedings. These qualities are especially important in a judge exercising the power of the state on the liberty, families, and property of the citizens.
His opponent, Tamar Hamilton, also comes with considerable legal experience, civil litigation, and experience as a special magistrate. This is not a contest between an experienced attorney and an inexperienced candidate.
But after reviewing the candidates' qualifications and records, we believe Fry's trial experience and work on both the prosecution and defense make him especially well prepared for the responsibilities of the circuit bench.
