South Florida voters face critical choices at the ballot box this election season. Across coastal Miami-Dade and legislative districts in the state capitol, voters require principled public servants who treat government as an exercise in community problem-solving rather than self-serving drama, scandal, or political opportunism.
To ensure ethical accountability, neighborhood stability, and steady representation, The County offers the following endorsements for these key state legislative contests.
In District 106, the contrast between the candidates could not be starker or more urgent for coastal Miami-Dade taxpayers.
Former Miami-Dade County School Board member Lucia Báez-Geller offers experienced, highly grounded public leadership centered on neighborhood needs, public education, and coastal resilience. A long-time high school teacher and dedicated advocate, Báez-Geller brings a track record of practical policy work. Her priorities focus squarely on expanding access to affordable housing, lowering property insurance burdens, and protecting vulnerable coastal infrastructure from chronic flooding.
By contrast, incumbent Representative Fabián Basabe has repeatedly brought embarrassment and chaos to District 106. Basabe's term has been marred by severe personal scandals and legal liabilities. Most notably, a Leon County civil jury found Basabe liable for sexual harassment, battery, and defamation in a trial brought by former legislative aides who accused him of a pattern of abusive behavior. Rather than demonstrating contrition or focusing on his constituents, Basabe responded to the civil verdict and public scrutiny with defensive op-eds and bizarre public statements, claiming among other things that he was "too attractive" to commit assault.
